Zuckerberg knocks AI development centralization, control

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg criticized the centralization of AI development on Tuesday, arguing the future of the technology should not be controlled by a limited group of major players.

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, the tech mogul focused on the prospect of superintelligence, or AI that can surpass human intelligence.

“The defining question of our age isn’t whether superintelligence will exist, but who will have access to it,” he wrote Tuesday. “Will it be centralized and restricted to a few institutions, or will it be a tool that empowers everyone?”

Zuckerberg took thinly veiled swipes at key AI rivals, including Anthropic’s Dario Amodei and OpenAI’s Sam Altman, voicing surprise that those leading the development of the emerging technology have offered perspectives “so filled with doom.”

“I don’t understand why anyone who believes that AI will eliminate most jobs and much of humanity’s relevance would rush to build that future,” he said.

Both Amodei and Altman have expressed concerns about the potential for AI to eliminate jobs.........
