Senate Democrats press Trump administration on DOJ antitrust chief’s ouster
A group of Senate Democrats pressed Attorney General Pam Bondi on Saturday about the recent departure of the head of the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) antitrust division, raising concerns about the Trump administration “commitment to enforcing” antitrust laws.
The DOJ’s antitrust head, Gail Slater, announced Thursday that she was stepping down less than a year into the role.
Seven Democrats, led by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), suggested that Slater’s departure was particularly concerning due to reports that “experts and attorneys at the Antitrust Division have repeatedly been sidelined by leadership at the Justice Department.”
“These actions raise serious questions as to the Justice Department’s commitment to enforcing the antitrust laws based on the objective application of the law and the facts of any given case,” the senators wrote.
“Instead, it appears that Justice Department leadership is undermining dedicated antitrust enforcers’ work to protect consumers and small businesses,” they continued. “We have significant concern that the facts and law regarding a specific merger or anticompetitive conduct may be less important than a company’s ability to exert influence.”
The group underscored that her resignation comes just weeks before the government is set to go to trial in a case against Ticketmaster and its parent company Live Nation.
The DOJ sued Ticketmaster and Live Nation in 2024, accusing the ticketing companies of blocking competition in the live entertainment industry. The case is scheduled for trial starting March 2.
Klobuchar and the other senators requested information about meetings and communications with representatives from Live Nation and Ticketmaster, as well as any discussions about Slater’s potential dismissal.
CBS News reported last week that top Trump officials had ousted the antitrust head shortly before she announced her departure on social media.
They are also seeking information about the dismissals of two of Slater’s deputies, who were fired last year amid a disagreement over the handling of a merger between Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Juniper Networks.
