Colbert rips CBS, saying lawyers barred interview with lawmaker
Comedian Stephen Colbert blasted CBS on Monday and said his own network’s attorneys barred him from hosting Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico.
“You know who is not one of my guests tonight? That’s Texas state representative James Talarico,” Colbert said as he opened his show. “He was supposed to be here, but we were told in no uncertain terms by our network’s lawyers, who called us directly, that we could not have him on the broadcast.”
The host then said “not only could I not have him on, I could not mention me not having him on. And because my network clearly does not want us to talk about this, let’s talk about this.”
Colbert attacked President Trump’s FCC chair Brendan Carr directly, saying he is motivated by “partisan purposes,” and accusing him of hypocrisy regarding his desire to do away with the agency’s “equal time” rule exemption for late night television programs.
Talk shows like Colbert’s are currently exempt from the FCC’s equal time rule, which dictates a program that interviews a candidate in an election year must also allow time for that candidate’s opponent.
“Let’s just call this what it is. Donald Trump’s administration wants to silence anyone who says anything bad about Trump on TV because all Trump does is watch TV,” Colbert continued. “He’s like a toddler with too much screen time. He gets cranky and then drops a load in his diapers. So, it’s no surprise that two of the people most affected by this threat are me and my friend Jimmy Kimmel.”
The host’s comments were first highlighted by Mediaite.
Colbert’s latest salvo against the Trump administration comes after the cancellation of “The Late Show,” following its parent company Paramount’s merger with Skydance.
Paramount implemented Bari Weiss as editor in chief of CBS News after the Skydance deal and Colbert’s cancellation, moves that have signaled a rightward shift at the David Ellison-led company.
Trump has been critical of Colbert, Kimmel and other late night comedians for years, and during his second administration has regularly threatened to use the power of the FCC to scrutinize their networks.
