Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell has resigned over allegations of sexual assault. Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales is finally gone, too, over his sordid behavior that ended in the suicide of a former staffer who set herself on fire. In the case of Gonzales, the GOP literally did nothing for months.

Besides a handful of lawmakers, nearly every single Republican on Capitol Hill has also done zilch about another unsavory member of Congress, opting instead to circle the wagons. The unfolding scandal perfectly captures the scummy back-room-dealing behavior that is politically expedient in the short term, but might come back to haunt them in the long run. Americans are rather fed up with Congress’s swampy insider baseball, and this latest egregious example will only confirm what they already knew.
