Drug terror needs to be confronted

OPINION: A few weeks ago we were shocked out of our naïve complacency by the actions of a right wing fundamentalist who shot and killed 51 defenceless people at two mosques in Christchurch. His irrational motivation seemed to be the protection of his so called white culture from an assumed threat from other cultures.

No one imagined such a thing could happen here and if it did it we thought it might have come from one of the many international Muslim militant groups with similar and equally irrational motivation. A white supremacist was not even on the radar.

Our initial human reaction of horror quickly turned to nationwide massive support for the bereaved families. In gathering information and details for a book on the event I found those reactions have been matched by a deep anger among normally gentle and non-vengeful people. Many have said that the attack was so far beyond the predictable that they feel a sense of responsibility or shared guilt.
