“Advanced age and being the subject of a felony probe are two characteristics Americans are not inclined to reward at the ballot box.” —Gallup, in a new poll from Jan. 2–22 that sampled 1,011 adults across all 50 states and Washington

It seems like a safe bet that this year’s election for president will be a face-off between Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Donald Trump. Yet, a new poll reveals that less than a third of Americans are willing to vote for someone who’s over the age of 80 or has been charged with a felony—and, uh, have they seen the presumptive nominees?

The poll, conducted by Gallup this month, shows that Americans would overwhelmingly support basically any other presidential candidate, with 93 percent saying they would vote for a female or Hispanic candidate; 92 percent for a Catholic or Black candidate; 88 percent for a Jewish candidate; and 74 percent for a gay or lesbian candidate.

Where Americans have started to draw a line is age and criminal record. Only 31 percent of respondents say they’d vote for someone who was over the age of 80. Twenty-nine percent would vote for someone charged with a felony—and 23 percent would vote for a convicted felon.

Biden, as we know, will be turning 82 shortly after this year’s general election. He broke the record for becoming the oldest president in U.S. history during his first term, and if he wins reelection, he’ll be on his way to breaking his own record during his second term. It’s worth noting that age is not Biden’s only problem, as voters have been giving him consistently low approval ratings for months. His stance on the Middle East—he recently was unabashedly supportive of military action in Yemen regardless of whether it’s “working”—is a glaring problem area for voters who generally are not supportive of the current Israel-Hamas war.

Trump, meanwhile, is currently 77 years old, but he faces 91 felony counts from four separate criminal indictments, all of which could go to trial this year. At least 35 states have mounted legal challenges that seek to keep his name off their ballots. So far, it’s worked only in Colorado and Maine, which both found that Trump engaged in insurrection, an act that disqualified him from appearing on their Republican primary ballots. Trump has appealed both decisions, and the Supreme Court will hear the issue next week.

It’s important to note that Trump has not been convicted, and it’s not clear if any of the criminal cases against him will make it to trial this year. That’s partially because Trump is appealing his federal election interference indictment, arguing that he’s protected from prosecution because of presidential immunity, and partially because other cases have yet to be assigned a trial date.

So what’s a voter to do? Well, Gallup predicts that some may “resort to a lesser of two evils calculation, while others may go the third-party route or simply choose not to vote.”
