RHODES: When streetcars ran on Chatham’s King Street
I have a Facebook group known as Chatham History in which our nearly 10,000 members submit photos and information regarding Chatham-Kent history.
Sometimes questions are asked that require detailed answers.
Recently one of our members asked, “When were the streetcar tracks removed from King Street?”
My response was, “Which time?”
There have been streetcar tracks located on King Street in two different eras.
The first local venture in track-based people transportation occurred in 1886 with the startup of the Chatham Street Railway Company.
The company was established to bring railway passengers to the core area from, or return them to, the Erie & Huron station at the far east end of King Street East and to the core area from the Grand Trunk (Via) station near the junction of Queen and William streets.
The meeting or staging area was to be at the King Street front of the Market Square where there was a short stretch of double tracks to allow the cars to pass one........
