I host a Facebook site known as Chatham History where members submit photos and offer opinions as to content, dates, etc.
I never know quite what to expect as far as submissions go.
I remember one person posting a photo of an old fashion shoe button puller that looked like some kind of primitive tooth extraction device.
It was about the size of a spoon with a hook on one end and a handle at the other.
In the handle was an embossed imprint reading George Cowan Boots and Shoes (my column, biography, Chatham This Week, June 25, 2008).
There was a time when men’s and women’s footwear were fastened with buttons and given the premise that the buttons fit snugly, it took some persuasion to pull the buttons into position, thus the need for such a device.
The button pullers were often given to customers as an advertising premium when they purchased shoes requiring the tool.
