The 2023 goal has been reached.

“I am pleased to report that we have reached $1,425,000, almost 102 per cent of our $1.4-million goal,” said Vicky Ducharme, the 2023 United Way campaign chairperson.

“We recognize that with inflation and high-interest rates, a lot of people and families have increased costs, but over 2,200 people, companies, and local businesses stepped up to support our community through the United Way, and I can not thank each donor enough for their support,” she said.

Ducharme said she and the United Way were feeling optimistic about the outcome of the campaign. “When a couple of crucial donors (who wish to remain anonoymous) came into the office near the end of the month and made their contributions known, we knew that was enough to put us over the top,” she said.

The United Way community investment committee has been meeting for almost two months, reviewing the funded agencies’ requests, service statistics, and outcome measures to ensure the donated money is well used to assist those people most in need most effectively. The committee also monitors the campaign closely so they know exactly how much money will be available for next year’s funding.

The community investment committee will be making their final recommendations shortly. They will present these recommendations to the United Way board of directors, a group of community volunteers, to make the final funding decisions in early January.

Ducharme said the meeting will occur on Jan. 8, 2024, and the funded agencies will be notified immediately. “The United Way has always worked quickly in determining the funding for each program, so all the affected agencies have as much time as possible to plan and prepare for the upcoming year’s commitment. The new funding term for all agencies will begin April 1, 2024,” she said.

There are 18 agencies funded which provide 30 programs and services with United Way support.

Officially, the United Way fundraising campaign will wrap up on Dec. 31, but it will take about a week in January to process all the mail donations that come in during the holidays. Mail donations must be post marked by Dec. 31 in order to be eligible for a 2023 year-end tax receipt.

Several workplaces already have planned fundraising events in the new year to help get the United Way 2024 campaign off to a great start.

CF Industries in Courtright, Ineos Styrolution and Lambton College already have started to plan fundraising lunches for the first quarter of 2024. Lambton College students are planning a high school basketball tournament for March 23.
