A used SUV that looks pristine on a test drive can still turn into a money pit down the road. Owner-reported reliability, road test performance and overall satisfaction can vary widely between midsized SUVs that otherwise seem similar on a used car lot.

Consumer Reports ranked 11 three-year-old midsized SUVs by reliability, drawing on owner surveys and its own road testing, so shoppers can find a used SUV less likely to need frequent repairs.

Priced from $27,750 to $32,950, the 2023 Toyota $TM 1.29% Venza is a hybrid SUV that shares its powertrain with the RAV4 Hybrid, combining a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and electric drive for 219 horsepower. Consumer Reports rated its reliability a 5 out of 5, and found its fuel economy reached 39 mpg overall, higher than any other SUV in this comparison. CR found the Venza offers a comfortable ride with sound overall handling, and every trim comes with all-wheel drive. Testers said road and powertrain noise stood out more than they'd like, and found the controls hard to focus on while driving, though top-tier Limited versions offer an optional dimmable glass roof.

The 2023 Toyota $TM 1.29% 4Runner costs $33,400 to $50,650 and is built around a 4.0-liter V6 paired with a part-time four-wheel-drive system that includes a low range for off-roading. Consumer Reports scored its reliability at 4 out of 5, and found its fuel economy landed at 18 mpg overall, one of the lower results in this comparison. CR found the ride unsettled and the handling clumsy, leaning noticeably in corners, and noted this model's road test score trailed every other SUV evaluated.........
