We often treat sleep as time taken away from more productive or enjoyable activities. We stay up to finish work, answer emails, watch another episode, or reclaim a little personal time at the end of the day.

The usual assumption is that the main consequence will be feeling tired the next morning. But two recent studies suggest that sleep loss may affect much more than alertness. Sleep is an active biological process that helps regulate hormones, metabolism, physical restoration, and how much we move the following day.

One study identified a brain circuit connecting sleep with growth hormone release. The other found that losing only about 80 minutes of sleep per night for six weeks was associated with modest weight gain and increased sedentary behavior.

Together, the findings suggest that regularly cutting sleep short may subtly shift the body toward poorer metabolic health, even when the sleep loss does not seem severe.

What the Brain Does During Sleep

Growth hormone is often associated with childhood development or athletic performance, but it remains important throughout adulthood. It contributes to tissue repair, muscle and bone maintenance, fat metabolism, and glucose regulation.

Scientists have long known that growth hormone secretion is closely tied to sleep, especially deep non-REM sleep. What has been less clear is how the brain coordinates that relationship.

In a study published in Cell, researchers examined neurons in the hypothalamus, a brain region involved in sleep, appetite, body temperature, and hormone regulation. Working with mice, they identified interactions between neurons........
