Small kindnesses seem to mean even more right now in a world gone mad, writes columnist Pam Frampton
One fine Italian afternoon in mid-February, we walked out of our vacation rental in Lecce to the stirring sounds of a brass band that seemed to be moving in our direction.

Suddenly they emerged from around a corner: 10 men dressed in colourful cartoon character costumes — Batman, the Joker, the Incredible Hulk and others I could not identify — and they were making a wonderful noise with saxophones, trumpet, tuba and drums.
We followed them down the winding cobblestone street like children after the Pied Piper. Their song was catchy and drew attention — as we passed cafés, shops and restaurants, curious servers and sales clerks paused what they were doing and came out into the street. Everyone was smiling.
It was the Zagor Street Band, known for their music, rhythm and energy. On this day, they were on their way to Piazza Sant’Oronzo, where exuberant children dressed in fantastical costumes of their own were........
