Delightful cakes, ice cream and cosy high tea await at Nannyberrys in Peterborough

Tucked just off Lansdowne Street in an unassuming spot is a charming café I had somehow overlooked, despite driving past it nearly every day.

Perhaps it escaped my attention during animated conversations with friends or family or the music playing in the background as we headed out to run errands. Whatever the reason, curiosity finally led me to park the car and make my way toward its inviting entrance.

Upon walking into Nannyberrys at 550 Lansdowne St. W., I could smell the aroma of coffee beans and baked goods. In front of me were packages of butter tarts, buns, bagels and pies that were placed on the wooden shelves. Everything looked appealing and there was even a section of day-old offerings at an affordable price available.

Nannyberrys is located at 550 Lansdowne St. W.

I was warmly greeted by one of the staff, who was just finishing up after preparing a hot beverage at the espresso machine for the customer ahead of me. She encouraged me to look around the store and told me to let her know if I needed anything.

I had come in looking for a cake as my oven unexpectedly stopped working the same week my daughter would be turning 18, and of course, we had scheduled her birthday party for that evening.

Over the years, I have had the pleasure of making the people in my life custom cakes using Betty Crocker cake mixes and icings. This year I would need something special that I could not recreate at home since my oven was not functional and I was looking for a beautifully decorated cake. I noticed a white cake with delicate pink frosting on it in the display case. There was a note that this cake offered both a vanilla and chocolate base. I asked to purchase it immediately as I knew my daughter would love it.

Nannyberrys features an ice-cream bar.

There is truly something for everyone at this little café and you will find yourself wanting to go back again. After watching the award-winning show, “Bridgerton,” I was excited to make note that the café offers high tea service on Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m., completed with a beautiful tea set featuring your favourite tea blend and a traditional three-tiered stand filled with scones, finger sandwiches, and desserts. It was cute to watch a little girl playing with the high tea wooden set in the play area at the front window.

While I was waiting, I noticed the large ice-cream bar that offered 55 flavours of Central Smith Ice Cream, which is produced locally. There was an option to order an ice-cream flight (a sample dish with a few different flavours) and the ability to create a custom frozen ice-cream cake. I noted I would need to come back to see if I was up for the challenge or to enjoy an ice-cream cake in the future.

At Nannyberrys, there are packages of butter tarts, buns, bagels and pies  placed on wooden shelves.

I was excited to see there was a freezer display case full of vibrant sorbets and gelatos that offered a selection of amazing flavours. Those who are lactose intolerant will appreciate that sorbets are dairy free and the gelatos are made with whole milk rather than cream. Both options are made with fruit purées or juices to create that flavourful taste.

There was a dedicated gluten-free section as well as vegan and vegetarian options available. I appreciate supporting local bakers who are able to have a weekly place to sell their items in a bright, clean and well-decorated space. Nannyberrys is more than just a café; it is a space that is inclusive for all ages and dietary needs.
