The expiry date on Quinn Hughes’ time as a Canuck was dwindling

While the Vancouver Canucks struggle to stay clear of the basement in the NHL standings, speculation had grown that GM Patrick Allvin needed to consider trading superstar defenceman Quinn Hughes. 

On Dec. 12, Allvin shipped Hughes to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, and a first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft. 

Trading away one of the top offensive blueliners in the league, is not an enviable assignment for any GM. However, the Florida born Hughes is destined for unrestricted free agency at the conclusion of the 2026-27 season. The 26 year old was selected in round one, seventh overall by the Canucks in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.
