Adam: Non-Christians are fine with Christmas — so have a merry one

The human rights commission recently stirred up a needless argument over statutory holidays, and politicians got in on the action. Bah, humbug to them all!

In a few days, millions of Canadians from all corners of the country will gather with family and friends to mark Christmas, as they have done for generations. And those of us who don’t celebrate will watch and offer best wishes.

But you wouldn’t know that this is the same Christmas that only weeks ago, politicians were falling over themselves to protect as if it were in some mortal danger. All because of a misguided paper published by the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC). In case you missed it, CHRC scored a spectacular own goal when it published an ill-conceived discussion paper suggesting that statutory Christmas holidays are a form of religious discrimination grounded in “colonialist” religious intolerance.
