Adam: 1,100 new housing units in Alta Vista by 2028, if federal government gets its way
The 1495 Heron Rd. project would include affordable housing — and preserve heritage buildings, the Canada Lands Company says. It's a positive step.

The federal government is ramping up its efforts for more housing, with a plan to build about 1,100 new homes on surplus land north of Heron Road in Ottawa’s Alta Vista neighbourhood.
Later this month, the Canada Lands Company (CLC), which acts as the federal government’s real estate development arm, will ask Ottawa Council to approve construction of a mixed-use community, likely to begin in 2026. Some 3,000 people would then move in, hopefully, by 2028. About 30 per cent of the units would be affordable, and 24 per cent of the site would be devoted to parks and green space.

“Ottawa needs housing and any development of this size will be a great addition to the city,” says Tara Dinsmore, CLC’s vice-president of real estate. “The federal government is really focused on building more affordable and market housing and this will fulfil part of the need. This is important for Ottawa for sure.”
