Part of The Square car park in Thorpe Marriott could be transformed into two flats and four garages, according to a planning application lodged with Broadland District Council.

The one-bed flats would be on the first floor above the garages and feature an open-plan kitchen, living room and dining area, as well as a bathroom, hallway and storage cupboards.

The applicant, TM Property Management, has described the section of the car park area proposed, which serves the Tesco Express, The Otter pub, the community centre and The Trinity Church Centre, as "underutilized".

According to the application, the car park is privately owned, with the surrounding buildings having no "formal right" to or ownership of the space.

The space earmarked for the build measures around 50m across, with numerous parking spaces at risk.

The Environmental Quality Team at Broadland District Council has provisionally objected to the plans and requested a noise impact assessment.

"We note that the proposed building is in close proximity to a public house and two takeaways that would obviously serve at least some of the people leaving the public house, additionally the village hall is available for hire for parties.

"Therefore, there is considered to be a significant risk of loss of amenity due to noise."

Someone living in nearby Suters Drive has also objected, raising fears over increased pavement parking in the nearby area during events at the pub or village hall.

They wrote: "In the last two years, restrictions have been put upon the car park which has caused confusion for the local residents who are now afraid to park there in fear of getting a fine.

"This has caused overspill into Acres Way, Pendlesham Rise and Suter Drive, meaning at evenings, busy weekends and during sporting events shown at the Otter pub that the areas get bogged down with cars parked across pavements and encroaching on driveways."
