Will Tamil Nadu theatres shut down from September 1? Ramesh Bala explains the OTT dispute and its possible impact on Sardar 2, Mandaadi and Demonte Colony 3.

New Delhi: The Tamil film industry could come to a standstill from September 1 after two major producer bodies, the Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) and the Tamil Film Active Producers Association (TFAPA), announced a halt to new theatrical releases, film shoots and post-production activities across Tamil Nadu.

The decision has been taken in protest against a new condition proposed by theatre owners and distributors over the release of films on OTT platforms.

The dispute centres on the OTT release window. The Tamil Nadu Film Distributors Association Federation and the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association have decided that, from September 1, theatres will not screen a new Tamil film unless its producer gives a written commitment that the movie will not arrive on an OTT platform for at least eight weeks after its theatrical release.
