Fitness and HIV: How exercise strengthens immunity and mental health
New Delhi: Living with HIV today means more than managing medication. It requires a holistic approach where exercise plays a transformative role. Dr. Palak Dengla, Chief Physiotherapist, Aster RV Hospital, Bangalore, spoke about the game-changing role of regular workouts when it comes to HIV management.
Research published in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes demonstrates that moderate-intensity exercise enhances immune parameters in HIV-positive individuals on antiretroviral therapy (ART). Exercise increases CD4 cell circulation, reduces chronic inflammation, and improves mitochondrial function—all critical for immune health. Regular physical activity also supports gut barrier integrity, which HIV often compromises, reducing inflammatory triggers throughout the body.
Strength Training: The Fatigue Fighter
HIV-related fatigue affects 33-88% of people living with HIV, creating overwhelming exhaustion that interferes with daily life. Strength training has emerged as one of the most effective interventions for this debilitating symptom.
