Google’s new AI Overview product is causing a stir on social media with bizarre suggestions like using non-toxic glue to stick cheese to pizza, eating rocks, and more. Despite a year of testing the feature in beta as Search Generative Experience, the rollout of AI Overview has proved messy. According to The Verge, Google is busy manually disabling the feature for certain searches as memes proliferate.

Former Reddit CEO Yishan Wong previously criticised big tech for their AI obsessions, leading them to deliver subpar products and experiences. While mentioning Google’s recent AI fiasco, he blames the trend of putting AI into products as soon as possible, despite LLMs being incapable of distinguishing between truth and falsehood.

According to The Verge, Google continues to assert that its AI Overview product largely provides high-quality information to users. According to Google spokesperson Meghann Farnsworth in an email to the publication, many of the unusual examples have been uncommon queries, and some appeared to be doctored or unreproducible.

Farnsworth also mentioned that the company is “taking swift action” to remove AI Overviews on certain queries appropriate under their content policies. The company is also said to using these incidents to make broader system improvements, some of which have already started rolling out.

Gary Marcus, an AI expert, told The Verge that many AI companies falsely promise their technology will improve from 80 per cent to 100 per cent accuracy. The expert added that while achieving the initial 80 per cent is easy since it involves approximating human data, the final 20 per cent is extremely difficult and may require artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Google is under pressure as competitors like Bing and new AI startups push forward, which probably pushed it to hasty AI releases. The company has ambitious AI plans, but its reputation suffers from not getting the basics right.
