New Delhi: Australia would be ‘frustrated’ after their batting collapse on Day 3 of the first Test against New Zealand, as said by veteran spinner Nathan Lyon who struck an impressive 41-run knock to top-score for his side in their second innings. Lyon was promoted up the order coming to bat as a nighthawk and put in a productive morning shift. Australia were bundled out for 164 in 51.1 overs after taking a good lead of 204 runs in the first innings.

Australia’s four batters got into the double digits with Mitchell Starc from the tail scoring 12 runs. The top-order batters failed to capitalise as Glenn Phillips ran through the Kangaroo batting order, bagging a five-wicket haul in the second innings. At day’s end, Lyon admitted that the Australian team would be frustrated after the batting performance they put up.

“I dare say so. But I’ll never criticise our batters the way they go about it because they’ve been exceptional for a number of years now. But then you’ve got to give credit to the bowlers and this is my big thing. Bowlers are actually there to bowl good balls. And it’s not always the batters’ fault getting out and bowlers are allowed to come up with plans and execute and take wickets. No doubt there will be some frustration in there,” Lyon said.

Lyon turned out to be the perfect nighthawk a team could root for as he not only defended the Australian batting order but scored at a continuous pace which got him the top score of 41 runs off 46 balls including six fours. It was Matt Henry who sent him back as Will Young caught him. On his innings, Lyon said that it’s the second time he has done it in his career (being a top-scorer in an inning) and he hopes that it’s the last.

He added that he wouldn’t get into a banter with his teammates over the same. Lyon is yet to score a half-century in the format but has got three knocks in the 40s in the traditional format, averaging at 12.72 from 128 Tests.

New Zealand have to chase 369 runs to clinch the first Test and they ended the third day at 113/3 after 41 overs. They still require 258 runs to win and Lyon said he will be making use of his “biggest weapon” to trouble the Kiwi batters. “My biggest weapon, and it’s no secret, is my bounce all around the world. So I’ll continue to try and put some over spin on the ball and try and get the bounce and try and hit the stickers on the bat and challenge the guys’ defence on the crease,” Lyon said.
