Will UK break up as Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland leaders to seek right to independence votes

Leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are meeting in Cardiff to sign a joint declaration asserting their right to seek independence referendums, in a major challenge to the UK’s constitutional settlement.

New Delhi: The United Kingdom faces a fresh constitutional challenge as the leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland prepare to meet in Cardiff on Monday to push for greater self-determination and the right to hold independence referendums.

The meeting comes at a politically sensitive time for the UK, days after US President Donald Trump publicly backed the reunification of Ireland and said he would ‘love’ to see a united Ireland. Trump, however, declined to comment on Scottish independence.

The leaders are expected to sign a joint memorandum of understanding or declaration affirming the right of the three nations to determine their own constitutional futures. The move does not mean that........
