Breaking News Live Updates: At least 40 people were killed and over 90 injured in a stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district on Saturday evening. The tragedy, among the state’s worst crowd disasters in decades, was triggered by Vijay’s delayed arrival, swelling crowds, and lack of food and water as thousands waited in the hot sun.
Chief minister M K Stalin visited Karur, met victims’ families, and announced Rs 10 lakh relief for the kin of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for the injured. A judicial commission has been appointed to probe possible lapses in crowd management and police deployment.
Karur District Collector M Thangavel confirmed on Sunday that 40 people have lost their lives in the stampede. He said Chief Minister M.K. Stalin rushed to the district overnight, directed immediate medical assistance for the injured, and announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for those undergoing treatment.

Actor-politician Vijay today announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the families of each of the 39 people killed in a stampede at his rally in Tamil Nadu's Karur last evening. The TVK chief said his party will also give Rs 2 lakh each to the nearly 100 injured in the tragedy.
Former Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday claimed that the stampede at the TVK's political rally here on September 27, showed evidence of security lapse on the part of the police and administration. Such a "shocking tragedy" which claimed 39 innocent lives besides hospitalising 51 people could have been averted had the police and state government taken sufficient precautionary measures, he said.
The bodies of 39 people who died due to stampede at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s rally here on September 27, have been identified and currently efforts were on to hand over their mortal remains to their relatives, Dindigul district collector S Saravanan has said on Sunday.
