Opinion | The Reiner Murders: When Personal Tragedy Becomes Political

The brutal, shocking deaths of Rob Reiner, the acclaimed filmmaker behind classics such as A Few Good Men and When Harry Met Sally, and his wife Michele Singer Reiner—both of whom were stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home—already constituted a wrenching family tragedy.

Their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was arrested and charged in connection with the double homicide. Investigators and family friends have described a decades-long struggle with the younger Reiner’s substance abuse and mental-health challenges, including a reported violent outburst at a recent holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien hours before the killings that frightened guests and escalated familial tensions.

Yet rather than leading with empathy and unity in the aftermath of the tragedy, US President Donald Trump turned the moment into a political statement, drawing rare and widespread criticism—including from within his own party.

A CONTROVERSIAL POST AFTER A TRAGEDY

On Truth Social, Trump posted a message alleging without evidence that Reiner and his wife had died “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through… Trump Derangement Syndrome," a phrase long used in conservative circles to dismiss critics as irrational.

Trump described Reiner as “a tortured and struggling, but once very talented" figure driven by a “raging obsession" with him. The message recast Reiner—a decades-long Democratic activist........
