Pakistan Condemns Israeli strikes on Lebanon As Death Toll Rises
Pakistan on Thursday strongly condemned Israel’s continued attacks on Lebanon, warning that the escalation risks undermining fragile regional stability amid an already volatile security environment.
In a statement, the Foreign Office described the strikes as “ongoing Israeli aggression” that had caused civilian casualties and widespread destruction of infrastructure. It said the attacks constituted a “blatant violation of international law and fundamental humanitarian principles” and called on the international community to take urgent steps to halt the offensive.
Islamabad also reaffirmed its “unwavering solidarity” with the people and government of Lebanon, reiterating support for the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and long-term peace.
The condemnation comes as Lebanon grapples with the aftermath of one of the deadliest days of violence in recent months. Authorities declared Thursday a national day of mourning after Israeli air strikes killed more than 200 people and wounded over 1,000, according to Health Minister Rakan Nassereddine. Public offices were shut, and flags lowered in tribute to the victims.
The Israeli military said it had targeted more than 100 sites across Beirut, the Bekaa Valley and southern Lebanon in what it described as a coordinated campaign. Large explosions were reported across the capital, sending plumes of smoke into the sky.
The escalation has also cast doubt on the durability of a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Confusion persists over whether Lebanon was included in the truce, with Israel maintaining that it was not covered by the agreement.
Hours after the strikes, Hezbollah said it had launched rockets towards Israel in retaliation, raising fears of a broader regional confrontation as tensions continue to spill across borders.
