Readers discuss Trump's fighting words about NATO, the blocking of a hospital by pro-Palestinian protesters, the 'Arrivescam' scandal, and more

Re: Justin Trudeau needs to wake up to Donald Trump’s reckless new world disorder — John Ivison, Feb. 11

When it comes to ownership of so-called “reckless new world orders,” Donald Trump has plenty of competition. The leaders of most of the western democracies, especially Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, can’t turn the keys to our energy security over to China fast enough in their efforts to combat climate change. Have these leaders spent any time pondering how reckless that is?

The former U.S. president says a lot of uncomfortable things. If his positioning on NATO causes some people to wake up and realize that Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, et al don’t give a hoot about a “rules-based world order,” that’s a good thing.

Jeffrey Barker, Mississauga, Ont.

Justin Trudeau and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh have forgotten the first duty of a national government: to protect the nation.

I spent 34 years in the army helping to protect Canadians, including the PM. Donald Trump is right: now it’s Trudeau’s turn to help protect me.

Re: Police investigating after Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital targeted by Pro-Palestinian protesters — Feb. 13, and Amira Elghawaby defends antisemitic protest in front of Toronto hospital — Jesse Kline, Feb. 15

On what planet is it considered civilized behaviour to bang drums and shout hate outside a hospital filled with sick and dying people?

Week after week we see these so-called “pro-Palestinian protests” roaming the city, paralyzing traffic and vandalizing businesses and other institutions, like Mount Sinai Hospital, that are associated with Israelis or Jews.

And week after week, we see an inadequate police presence, reluctant to disperse the mobs or to make arrests unless prodded by public outrage. If the city does not have enough police to manage the mobs, then let’s take a page from the Ottawa police who brought in police from elsewhere to help deal with the invasion of guitar-playing truckers and their bouncy castles: get support from neighbouring communities.

The Mount Sinai Hospital “protest” was an appalling and disgusting spectacle that should never have been allowed to happen. Dr. Raghu Venugopal is my personal hero. Too bad there aren’t more like him!

E. Joan O’Callaghan, Toronto

The inaction of the Toronto Police Services should sound an alarm for anyone committed to the rule of law and the fundamental values that underpin Canadian society.

Standing by, failing to intervene as security is compromised, serves as nothing less than an open invitation and tacit endorsement of the spreading of anti-Jewish hate. An arrest, even if made a day later, is too late; the harm has been done. The insult to our institutions and the Jewish community cannot be undone.

It is time for politicians to move beyond words of condemnation. Declarations of support are empty without accompanying actions.

Re: The safer supply farce is unravelling — Editorial, Feb. 10; and Selina Robinson’s ouster shows NDP has no place for Jews who don’t submit — Rahim Mohammed, Feb. 6

The most recent chapter in B.C. Premier David Eby’s sorry state of affairs underlines his continued blundering in addressing some of his province’s most pressing issues. Efforts to deal with the skyrocketing drug problems plaguing Vancouver and other cities have failed miserably. Why are the alcoholics not demanding free booze to address their addiction?

However, the Selina Robinson affair shows something more troubling. Eby’s complete inability to stand up to the pro-Palestinian mob who were offended by hearing her speak the truth about Israel and her “crappy piece of land” statement (which was entirely true). This infestation of “cancel culture” is another pathetic example of what happens when the moral backbone to support those who speak the truth is sacrificed on the altar of a few votes.

The NDP’s record on antisemitism is far from stellar so let us hope that Minister Robinson finds another tent under which she can continue to make a meaningful contribution to public service in this country.

Re: Vladimir Putin brings up Canada’s applause for ex-Nazi in Tucker Carlson interview — Tyler Dawson, Feb. 9

Again, the National Post calls Yaroslav Hunka a “Nazi.” The facts are clear: Mr. Hunka was never a “Nazi” because no Ukrainian ever could be.

Yes, he served in the Galicia Division, in an anti-aircraft unit.

He was a child soldier at the time. He did so to protect his homeland, having personally witnessed the horrors the Soviets perpetrated during the final days of their brutal occupation of western Ukraine, in late June 1941.

And, like everyone who served in the armed forces of the Third Reich, he was obliged to swear an oath to Hitler.

That did not transform him, or many millions of other German veterans, into “Nazis.”

Since there is no evidence that Hunka was involved in any criminal behaviour during the war, and we know that he immigrated legally to Canada and has no criminal record here, why do the Conservatives keep spinning this yarn?

Re: ArriveCAN could be the nail in the Liberals’ political coffin — Tasha Kheiriddin, Feb. 13

Notwithstanding the large volume of writing dedicated to the ArriveCAN scandal, four words we have not yet seen are: employment terminated with cause. And if we do not see those words, then it should follow that we see four other words: the minister has resigned.

Re: The notwithstanding clause in action — Chris Selley, Feb. 10

I have often felt that Canada is richer, culturally, as a nation, because we have the province of Quebec with its unique language, customs and laws and I, along with millions of other Canadians rejoiced when the sovereignty referendum of 1995 failed. But just because I want Quebec to remain in Canada doesn’t mean that I also want them to melt into the same, amorphous, multicultural blob that the rest of Canada has become.

It is refreshing to hear the Québec Solidaire’s Alexandre Leduc say that while the Charter refers to multiculturalism, that is not Quebec’s political doctrine. Imagine! A province that believes enough in itself to reject the notion that we must have every other culture in the world come and remake us in their own image.

Our prime minister doesn’t believe that Canada has a core identity. Quebec Premier François Legault believes that his province does, and he is fighting to maintain that. If other Canadian leaders had the same kind of pride in who we are as a nation, maybe there would be a little more “social cohesion” and a stronger sense of purpose and direction that seems to be so sorely lacking today.

Re: Steven Guilbeault’s latest command – no new roads for all the electric cars — Don Braid, Feb. 14; and NDP bill would prescribe jail terms for speaking well of fossil fuels — Tristin Hopper, Feb. 7

I suggest that Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault join hands with NDP MP Charlie Angus and both take a long walk in the snow. It’s time to end their idealistic efforts to eliminate the energy business in Canada, and for us to eliminate the Liberal and NDP dictatorship of our country.

Douglas MacLean, Canmore, Alta.

Since the Trudeau government has decided that it will have zero dollars for new road infrastructure in Canada, can we just cancel all the billions the government is giving away for electric cars and their parts? I would rather have that taxpayer money back in my own pocket.

Chris Robertson, Stony Plain, Alta.
