Readers lament the lack of support being shown for Canada's Jewish community in the face of virulent antisemitism

Re: Justin Trudeau just can’t stop appeasing Israel’s enemies — Jesse Kline, Nov. 15

I spent a few days in southern Florida last week and I couldn’t help but notice that every Jewish synagogue and school had two police cars parked outside with two officers in each car. It was a jarring sight but I can assure you that the Jewish residents of those communities were reassured by the police presence.

I also heard local and state politicians forcefully condemn Hamas atrocities and wholeheartedly support Israel’s right to self-defence. They also denounced, in unequivocal terms, the Jew-hatred being spewed on American campuses and in the streets by pro-Hamas supporters.

I get back to Canada, and what do I see in response to the crowds screaming for the extermination of the Jewish people, the fire-bombing of synagogues and bullets being fired at Jewish schools? I hear Montreal’s mayor and our prime minister pulling out the same old go-to: “This is not who we are.”

Wouldn’t it be refreshing if our politicians, instead of mouthing empty platitudes, actually took concrete steps to protect the Jewish community?

When Jewish institutions are attacked, when Jewish people are afraid to wear yarmulkes in public, when thousands of our fellow citizens are comfortable about openly embracing the genocide of the Jewish people, that is a time when politicians must act forcefully and with at least a minimal amount of moral certitude.

The city of Montreal and the province of Quebec should provide the security that Jewish institutions sadly require. It is absolutely shameful that the Jewish community has to provide and pay for their own security. Police officers should be stationed on the grounds of Jewish schools, synagogues, libraries and Holocaust museums for the foreseeable future, at least until the very real threat has passed.

It is beyond comprehension that so many of our non-Jewish countrymen seem unfazed by the collective trauma being experienced by their Jewish neighbours. I pray that my fellow Canadians come to recognize the truth of the Nazi-like character of the anti-Israel protests and demand that politicians enforce the provisions of hate-crime legislation to hold accountable people who would tear down posters of kidnapped children, who would deny Israel the right of self-defence and who overtly and who unashamedly advocate for the extermination of the Jewish people.

Re: Western media wilfully ignorant of Hamas using hospitals for war crimes — Jesse Kline, Nov. 14

The Israel-Hamas war has highlighted the lack of moral conviction and backbone of many in the media, and sadly also our prime minister, in standing up to those who under the guise of advocating for Palestinian rights, are calling for the death of Jews and the state of Israel.

Justin Trudeau and those in the media know very well that Hamas-Palestinian society values do not include religious tolerance, free speech, equality of the sexes, gay rights, free and fair elections and independent judiciary. These are all values that Canada shares with Israel yet Trudeau fails to acknowledge this and in effect offers passive support to anti-Israel demonstrations.

The anti-Israel demonstrators hold our Canadian values in contempt and our prime minister and all fair-minded Canadians should hold them in contempt. The fact that Trudeau and many in his Liberal government do not is disgraceful, to say the least.

Tristin Hopper rightly recalls that in 2002, Concordia University was the site of a riot when current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was invited to speak there.

The riot was noteworthy for the violence it provoked. One of the instigators of that violence was none other than Laith Marouf, who, with the blessings and a pocketful of cash from the Trudeau government, set out in more recent years to school Canadian media on “antiracism.”

Having been found out, Marouf has since absconded to Lebanon without repaying the money he was given. Nor do we know who actually OK’d this unholy deal.

Re: Canadian Jews should not be leaving just yet — Jonathan Milevsky, Nov. 9

Dear Jonathan Milevsky, thank you for not leaving Canada. There are many supporters of the Jewish community in Canada although sometimes it doesn’t seem that way.

Unfortunately many of the pro-Palestinian demonstrators kept their bigotry and hatred when they arrived on our shores and were never encouraged to shed them. Our “esteemed” prime minister unfortunately is more interested in that particular voting bloc than in doing what is right and siding unequivocally with the Jewish community.

In Nova Scotia, in 2007, when a student was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt, two incredible high school students decided to take a stand. They went out and bought 50 pink shirts to give to fellow students to wear to show their support for the boy who was being bullied.

These days, there is a serious manifestation of antisemitic activity directed against Jewish people, Jewish institutions and Jewish schools. It would be wonderful if non-Jewish people found inspiration from those Nova Scotia teenagers, and showed positive support for their Jewish neighbours who feel vulnerable and abandoned.

Re: My ‘never-hire’ list is growing as new petition also glosses over Hamas’ atrocities — Howard Levitt, Nov. 10

Howard Levitt’s comments on the petitions both by and in support of the Toronto Metropolitan University law students provide a fascinating overview of the legal underpinnings of potential employer action against the signatories.

The concern is not their support for Palestinian civilians, but that their support encompasses Hamas, a terrorist group. From a practical perspective, for lawyer wannabes to be so ignorant of the facts surrounding the conflict and the true nature of Hamas, suggests their ability to research issues, a key legal skill, as well as their judgment, are severely lacking, deficiencies that will not endear them to potential employers or their clients. Employing them might also disrupt an otherwise collaborative and harmonious work environment, which few employers would willingly risk.

Free speech is legally protected, but when job applicants are known to have engaged in hate speech, no one should be surprised if prospective employers take a pass.

Re: For the good of Canada, Justin Trudeau should go — Joe Oliver, Nov. 1

For the first time in my life, I am not proud to be a citizen of Canada.

The list of scandals surrounding the Trudeau government is too long to write. The lack of a clear response to foreign interference in our elections is just one of them. Under the “leadership” of Justin Trudeau, Canada is now an inconsequential member of the western alliance. Regarding the Israel-Hamas war, statements issued by this government are clearly biased against Israel.

Antisemitism is hitting record levels in Canada. “Hate fests” calling for the death of Jews are tolerated. Canadian children are attending school under police protection, telling their parents they are terrified. What is our prime minister doing about this?

It is time for new leadership. It is time for the NDP to stop supporting an inept government that lacks moral clarity and whose first impulse is usually wrong. We need a prime minister more interested in the welfare of the citizens of this country than in travelling around looking for photo-ops and talking in platitudes when he deems it necessary to make a statement.

When I travel again, I certainly will not be putting Canadian decals on my luggage. At this point in time I have no reason to brag.
