Something has gone very wrong with western progressives
The Oct. 7 genocidal Hamas/Islamic Jihad attack on Israel had the silver lining of producing moral clarity. Which might seem poor compensation but when things are bad and getting worse fast, it’s vital to see them as they are. Including the perplexing fact that so many western feminists went off the deep end, or revealed themselves as having long since done so, to the point of denying that the jihadis committed savage acts of rape and butchery not merely from general depravity but as a preplanned weapon of terrorist genocide.

When I say moral clarity, I don’t mean everybody suddenly learned to tell right from wrong. I mean we quickly and clearly found out who didn’t. There was widespread shock at the extent to which progressives rallied to Hamas right after an attack that killed more Jews for being Jewish than on any one day since the Holocaust. And that after taking time to reflect, so many doubled down. Especially those whose progressivism had led to privileged positions with the Canadian state, from academia to public sector unions to “anti-racist” consultants who rave about and openly threaten “Jewsaders.”
Even our prime minister thrashes about trying to look virtuous and looking weird instead, drawing a demented moral “equivalence” between Hamas and Israel that favours Hamas. He instantly believes their claims about bombed hospitals, while doubting pronouncements by the only democratic government in the Middle East. He says “the pathway toward a secure, viable, independent Jewish state alongside a secure, viable independent Palestinian state is getting more difficult with all the hardship that Palestinians are going through” without mentioning that “From the river to the sea” is an explicit rejection of the two-state solution, from one side only, whose sincerity is underlined by constant murderous attacks.
He also misrepresents the situation in Canada including ignoring those chants here and their plain meaning. He recently said “Whether it’s a woman in a hijab getting spat on, or a Jewish kid going to a college campus (who) is not feeling safe, or gunshots fired at Jewish schools, or a terrifying rise in Islamophobia alongside the significant rise and very troublesome rise in antisemitism … we are not a country where Canadians should be scared of other Canadians.”
We absolutely are a country where decent Canadians should be scared of other Canadians who shoot at Jewish schools. Or parade through major cities chanting genocidal slogans in Arabic. How is that not terrifying? Yet Trudeau finds the supposed rise in Islamophobia “terrifying” whereas the “significant” rise in antisemitism is merely “very troublesome”? He just can’t find his balance. Or rather, he has found it in a nasty place.

So far, reassuringly, the belated response of most authorities has been to concede that technically we probably shouldn’t coddle murderous Jew-hatred. If we continue our demographic transformation it may change. But for now even some university presidents have found or feigned a backbone on the right side.
Thus the University of Alberta fired the director of its Sexual Assault Centre for signing an open letter (Ontario MPP Sarah Jama was the first signatory) questioning the veracity of reports that Israeli women were raped during the Oct. 7 attack. And the NDP ousted Jama for her toxic views. But what are feminists doing in this company? Isn’t what one writer called “MeToo unless you’re a Jew” the weirdest case of progressive dementia thus far?
It sure got noticed in famously progressive Israel. And here. And rightly so, especially as there’s more where it came from. Including rabid “decolonizers” who deny Jews the right to their ancestral homeland from which they were ethnically cleansed by newcomers peddling the deranged lie that the Temple of Solomon never stood on the site now occupied by the in-your-face Al-Aqsa Mosque, to which Israelis ensure Muslim access while their neighbours desecrate synagogues and Jewish cemeteries. Or the UN not mentioning underage hostages on “World Children’s Day.”
Please make a quick mental list of the things on which progressives pride themselves. They are democratic, sensitive, open-minded, tolerant, feminist, pro-LBGTQ+ and peaceful, right? Now list those on which Hamas openly prides itself: dictatorial, ruthless, dogmatic, death-to-Jews, patriarchal, death-to-gays holy warriors. Where’s the only place in the Middle East a transgender Muslim can speak “their truth?” Right. The one regime progressives hate with frenzied unreason to the point of denying ghastly forensic evidence of sexual violence by maniacs systematically briefed in advance on how to say “Take off your pants” in Hebrew.
Something is very wrong here. And not just the thrill of hanging with the rough trade. There’s something dark, self-loathing and evil about an ideology that claims to overflow with love to the point that its adherents can’t wait to scream obscenities and excuse genocidal rape.
You may say it’s not much of a silver lining. But at least now we know.
