The BC Conservative implosion bodes well for Canadian politics

It’s easy to see why BC Conservative Leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay canceled a caucus meeting planned for Monday. It’s tough to rally what’s left of your troops when there’s still a flood of them beating it to the door.

Since Findlay became leader, seven Conservative MLAs have left the party, although this number could well be out of date by publication, given all the speculation that more will follow.

The defectors cited concerns with Findlay’s hard-line policies, hiring practices and leadership style. There is even a chance that Findlay could be on the wrong side of the law after a leaked recording reportedly caught her trying to bribe fellow MLAs with future job offers if they gave up their seat so she could run in a byelection.

The latest to go was Á’a:liya Warbus, the party’s only Indigenous MLA, who quit the party on Monday to sit as an independent. That she lasted that long was a miracle, given Findlay’s antagonism toward reconciliation efforts like the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) and glaring insensitivity to the wishes of Indigenous people. Findlay’s instruction to resurrect the culturally inaccurate, antiquated and racist term “Indian” was just the latest in a series of barbs directed at First........
