Have you ever pushed a crosswalk button, waited to cross the street, and wondered whether that button did anything at all? There’s a good chance it didn’t. Over the past decade or so, the majority have been disabled in major cities and places with a lot of traffic. Crosswalk buttons in suburban places are more likely to work, but they may be disabled as well.

Why even have buttons that do nothing? The answer comes down to limited municipal budgets. Sophisticated traffic management systems that sense how many cars are present or use........
