There is a long history of Scots right at the top of Britain’s intelligence services. Meta Ramsay, from Glasgow, who I got to know well before her death this May, almost became the first woman to head MI6.
The ranks of MI5 have bristled with Scots over the decades. Indeed, its current director-general is Sir Ken McCallum from Glasgow. Unfortunately for McCallum, if justice is to be served his tenure must come to a speedy end.
MI5 is embroiled in an appalling scandal which strikes at the very heart of the administration of law in Britain. If the intelligence agency set up to protect the UK is undermining our democracy, then someone must carry the can and that means the man at the top must go.
The case centres on a neo-Nazi agent working for MI5. The Security Service has just accepted that it gave evidence based on lies to three courts in relation to the case.

The admission came from the lawyer representing the agency on Friday morning during a High Court hearing. A panel of three judges is now considering what action to take, including whether to initiate contempt of court proceedings. Such a step would be unprecedented.
