So, we live in a country where the army plans the assassinations of three wanted men in their homes at night when they are asleep with their families – their wives, their small children ages four, eight and 12 – by bombing them from the air with 40 fighter jets. “Eureka!” cried one of the brilliant IDF officers, a planning wizard, a genius at thinking outside the box, an ace. I’ve got it, I know how we can eliminate these three men who deserve to die.

In fact, we live in a country in which teams of people – scores, if not hundreds of small, medium and large cogs in the system – gathered intelligence, toiled over the data and examined all the options. They considered the military, political, legal and moral dimensions, and then they said yes – it’s legitimate, beneficial, proper, necessary, justified. We have no choice; after all, war is hell. One who becomes merciful instead of cruel will eventually be hit back by their children. The Jews are a merciful people, that’s our problem.

Four-, eight- and 12-year-old children. Their parents deserved to die, so what are they to us? There’s nothing to do, it’s permissible, it’s legal, it’s mandatory, we have no choice. We were ordered, and we obeyed and murdered children in cold blood in order to eliminate their fathers. The children blown up by Israeli warplanes died for the sins of their fathers.

I do not understand military operations, and I do not know if there was another way to assassinate these wanted men without killing their wives, children and neighbors; all told, 10 innocent lives. But I do know that there are means that cannot be sanctified, certainly not in advance, as a legitimate military goal in the war on terror – certainly not in light of the power relations between Israel (a nuclear power with the full backing of the world’s only superpower) and Islamic Jihad.

It’s worth concentrating on the “decision-making process” undertaken in cold, icy blood by warm Israelis. Because it is indeed a long process. It’s not just boom, let’s do it. This was not a clash with enemy soldiers, or a gun battle that claimed the lives of innocents, as fate would have it. Not a case of accidental shooting, a missile that got its target confused, or a tragic case of an innocent bystander, perhaps a shepherd, who accidentally wandered into the range of tank shells, may Allah have mercy. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.

No, no, no, that is not at all what happened here.

The IDF spokesman made no claim that according to the intelligence available to the military, the children were not supposed to be home but rather they were supposed to be with their mother, with their grandmother, in the village.

It’s clear that they did not count on them being at the scene of the “incident”. Something screwed up badly. The little one didn’t feel well, he ate too many sweets given to him by a doting grandmother, and so the mother decided they were coming home in the middle of the night.

Oops, we were wrong, and 40 air force planes bombed them in their beds. The military expresses its regret. The State of Israel was not sorry. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant – the one for whom we poured out into the streets a few weeks ago in a spontaneous protest over his dismissal, because enough already, what’s going on here is madness, simply madness – didn’t express their regret, because in the big picture it wasn’t a mistake at all. Sure, it is always sad when innocent children are killed, but we were not sad that we ordered them killed, because their father was a terrorist, and he deserved to die.

No, no, no, that’s not what happened here. What was here? What will be here?
