The higher education sector in Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed significant expansion over the last two decades, with the establishment of more universities, colleges, and other technical and management institutions across the region. While this expansion is aimed at to improve the access to higher education, it has also created new challenges for academic colleges and universities that require immediate attention. One of the most pressing concerns is the duplication of academic programmes across the colleges and universities, declining student enrolment, least student preferences for certain disciplines including Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Electronics, underutilisation of institutional capacity, and outdated/redundant curricula that do not adequately address the demands of the region as well as of the contemporary world. 

With the result on one hand, the continuing joblessness of graduates and other degree holders has put a question mark on the degree awarding process and on the other hand, admission decline has opened a debate on quality vs. numbers of institutions. A University in private sector has also been established now. This is expected to reduce the need for students to leave J&K for job oriented higher education besides creating jobs for local faculty, researchers, administrative staff, and support personnel.

Many institutions in J&K provide similar undergraduate and postgraduate programmes without adequate consideration of collaboration to fulfil regional needs, employment opportunities,........
