I’m a hopeless romantic. Incurable, in fact.

I also like to have fun on my dates: in 1988, I told a date to wear one of her favourite dresses for her birthday dinner because I was picking her up in a stretch limo — which I did, and then elegantly pulled into a drive-thru at McDonalds, before going to the Top of The Inn, one of Edmonton’s most romantic dining rooms in its day.

Sorry ’bout that, Judy. Kind of.

So with Valentine’s Day easily within Cupid’s aim and the Super Bowl Sunday afternoon — big, big football fan — and the world’s most notable couple in the spotlight, I am like a sweet-tooth in a candy store right now.

And I think the latest chapter of Taylor and Travis unfolding at the world’s biggest sporting event is, exactly, what our world needs right now.

Not too far away from this journalistic journey, both in print and online, are stories of strife in the world: of wars, of political leaders finding them in rivers of hot water and alligators nipping at their toes, of television and radio stations being unplugged from so many centres they brought together as informed communities, and of a crime not yet committed, but is in the throes of being planned.

To scribble the world is without love may be too stern, but the thought is certainly there.

Our lovebirds, singer Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, swooped out of their nest last autumn for all the world to see.

Swift’s cheering in private boxes at NFL games gave television camera operators covering the games another part of the field to zoom in.

One media report said Swift appeared 17 times during one broadcast.

And then there’s the following of Kelce bulldozing or lunging his way into the other team’s end zone.

Was it too much screen time for Swift and Kelce? Hard to say, really.

But the fact it’s still on top of mind and is in the media mix suggests the faithful are still interested.

Heck, there were even stories Saturday about folks wanting to track Swift’s private jet on a 12-hour hop over the Pacific Ocean from Tokyo, where Swift had a concert Friday, to where this year’s Super Bowl is being played, Las Vegas.

Now that’s a little over the top.

But the fact we want to see two of the planet’s most famous people, as a couple, with a legitimate shot of being in love, as a couple, together for ever and ever is comparable to two good friends we watch grow together … two people we hope are happy together.

We need more love in the world, even if it’s from afar.

It has the opportunity to lure our attention from the other news of the day.

And, it could even challenge us to go looking for love ourselves.

But for now it’s Super Bowl Sunday, when anything can happen.

There are, alas, limos and McDonald’s in Vegas.

Don’t knock it until you try it.
