Sabotage, fury and dirty protest as villagers rage at destruction of Earl's woodland

Broome Heath in Ditchingham has instead become the focus of a bitter dispute marked by hostility, vandalism...and even dirty protests.

In recent years much of the land has been divided, cut down and sold off for angling, leaving many villagers outraged.

A fresh spate of clearance and development work appears to have proved a tipping point, and a contractor's tyre has been slashed and dog faeces smeared on the seat of his digger.

The heath, near Bungay, is largely owned by Ditchingham Estate, which has permitted villagers to use it for more than 30 years.

Villagers were previously largely free to roam around the 78-acres of heath, lakes and vibrant woodland as they pleased.

However, work has been under way to transform the heath into an anglers' paradise.

The lakes have been advertised to anglers for around five years, where many now rent out spots to look for the carp, tench, bream, roach, rudd and pike which swim among the vibrant waters.

Since work began, the lakes at the site have been fenced off and trees have been cut down, with dog walkers told to put their pets on leads as the estate........
