Ann Sturzaker, née Featherston) was born in Purley, south London, on May 26, 1944.

After leaving school, she worked as a librarian for a year before training as a nurse at Guy’s Hospital in London.

It was there, in 1966, that she met her future husband, Hugh Sturzaker, when he was the house physician on her ward.
