The competition for the best wheat crop was won by Boughton-based farmer and contractor Tim Payne with a sample of Extase variety whose specific weight of 81.6 indicated its high grain quality. The guest speaker for the evening was Roy Swain from the East Anglian Air Ambulance which, along with RABI (the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution), were the charities chosen to benefit from the fundraising.

Mr Cockerill said: "Guests heard about the tireless efforts of the air ambulance and all its staff, something which hits home to many agricultural people in Norfolk, being our lifeline if something terrible was to happen in the field.

"These people would be crucial to many unfortunate accidents in a rural location, their speed being the best possible chance of treatment and ultimately, survival."

Mr Cockerill said the dinner was a "great night" to round off the society's year, adding: "We look forward to welcoming members old and new back after harvest for another autumn/winter of meetings, with the calendar filling up nicely."
