The 43rd Norfolk County Farm Business Competition is open for entries from April 13.

Prizes are awarded for all farm types and sizes, culminating in the coveted overall championship title which was won last year by the Raynham Estate near Fakenham.

A new addition this year is a prize for "best arable crop" in each of the two main farm size classes.

Rob Norman, who chairs the competition's organising committee for the Aylsham Agricultural Show Association, said he wanted "to broaden the opportunity for an entry to win an award".

"The best arable crop may not go to the first or second placed farm, but someone lower down the order may, in the judges' eyes, have a stand-out crop which they feel should win the best arable crop in the class," he said.

The competition, sponsored by Brown and Co, is open to anyone whose main homestead or 60pc of the total farmed land is within Norfolk.

Judges will assess the farm’s cropping, livestock husbandry and use of available resources. There is also a special diversification category.

Judging takes place on June 11 and 12.
