Safety advocates are following the unfolding drama of the recent gun battle involving passengers on an American-registered boat and Cuban border forces.

Leftist outlet 'Democracy Now' offers a predictably sympathetic, pro-regime take on the incident and living conditions under a long-term US embargo:

This would be a good time for anyone younger than 'Baby Boomer' and 'Gen X' vintage to Google the phrase, 'Bay of Pigs' for a large scale predecessor of what critics suspect this encounter was: a mission into Cuba by armed paramilitary opponents of its government.

If true, inquirers will seek to link these captive suspected commandos to the US government. Following the Maduro arrest in Venezuela and calculated carnage after the death of a leading Mexican drug lord, regional morale could use a viral show trial punishing an unsuccessful US intervention.

A less popular competing theory is that these were drug smugglers caught off guard by Cuban law enforcement.

I don't know how far that line of reasoning will go. Probably not very far at all.

We shall see which narrative gains traction and how it impacts the fight against illegal aliens and narco terrorists self-imported onto these shores…

I'm no fan of the regime running that island nation. Additional leeriness exists regarding zealous, exiled opposition based in Miami, Florida. It's their battle but one in which this country has involved itself for generations.

Safety advocates should closely monitor this situation because it could prompt heightened immigration unrest and operations by intelligence agencies belonging to Cuba and its allies.

As if things weren't tense enough already on that topic.

Especially with a midterm election coming up. At risk are Republicans losing the US House speakership. This loss would take with it political backing the Trump administration needs to continue deportation and updated 'Monroe Doctrine' operations.
