Western Canada’s natural gas industry faces some headwinds to start 2026, but it also appears set for another year of rising production, hitting an all-time high.

Total gas output in Western Canada, driven by the prolific Montney formation in northern Alberta and British Columbia, averaged more than 19 billion cubic feet (bcf) per day last year, up about four per cent from 2024 levels, according to RBN Energy.

The sector set a monthly record in November of about 20.2 bcf per day, noted Martin King, RBN Energy’s managing director of North America energy market analysis.

As the industry continues to boost production — and the massive LNG Canada project increases its capacity — total gas output in 2026 is expected to average almost 20 bcf a day, the highest annual figure out of Western Canada, he said. 

“The wells just continue to be more productive. They just keep getting better at drilling bigger-producing wells. They’re able to maintain production levels for longer,” said King.
