A man flew a glider over Newell’s Old Boys’ stadium dropping Rosario Central pamphlets during the Newell’s match against San Lorenzo in Rosario this Sunday. Home fans responded furiously, attacking journalists and destroying their equipment.

At minute 45 of the game, part of the eighth Copa de la Liga matchday, the man flew over Newell’s Coloso del Parque stadium, dropping leaflets mocking the home team over their loss to Rosario Central in the Rosario derby, one of the most hotly contested in the country.

They included messages such as “call me dad” and “bottlers”, hinting at Central’s lead in the head-to-head tally and Newell’s famous 1992 Copa Libertadores final loss.

While most home team fans chanted to mock its old rival over the four times they’ve been relegated to the second tier (Newell’s, by comparison, has been relegated just once, in 1960) others attacked journalists covering the events.

The press boxes were pelted with stones, forcing broadcasters to cut their transmission, and a TyC Sports camera was damaged. Attackers faced off against the police when they tried to enter the press boxes.

Outside the stadium, the VAR transmission equipment van which transmits the footage to the Argentine Football Association’s offices in Ezeiza was also attacked. Despite the problems, the match was allowed to continue, finishing in a 2-2 tie.

Later that night, Rosario police detained four people in the nearby town of Granadero Baigorria, with equipment similar to that used to glide over the stadium, and boxes with the pamphlets that were dropped. The incidents come after Rosario Central beat Newell’s 1-0 away during the 2024 fecha de los clásicos, beating its traditional rival at their home for the first time since 2017.
