China can be quick to point out flaws in the US economy. In recent years, state media has enthusiastically covered racial tensions and socioeconomic inequality, government shutdowns, the soaring cost of living and Washington’s fiscal woes. After all, these feed into President Xi Jinping’s narrative that China can offer a better alternative development model to the world.

As both sides seek to stabilize their relations with the first face-to-face meeting in a year between Xi and President Joe Biden this week, China’s press is toning down its rhetoric and talking up economic cooperation. Xi seems keen to roll out the red carpet for US companies, reportedly wanting to sit down for a banquet with American business leaders before meeting with Biden. Last quarter, foreign investments into China turned negative for the first time since records began in 1998.
