As we tackle the climate crisis, the human-built world is going through huge changes: Millions of buildings need retrofitting with energy-efficiency measures and clean heating; infrastructure needs to be adapted or built to protect against weather that’s becoming more intense, more frequently; and fresh green habits need to be formed.

As we push ahead with this progress — I say progress because such measures will help improve our air quality, reduce people’s bills and make us safer — tensions have arisen with some of those wishing to preserve our cultural history. They’re fighting the wrong fight.
