On a recent Friday, there was little sign of the drama in 2022 that made JFK8 the most talked about warehouse in America, save for some tattered ribbons tied to a chain-link fence that spelled out the letters “ALU” — Amazon Labor Union.

Two years ago this week, 2,654 workers won a huge victory at this location on Staten Island in New York by voting “yes” to a form the first union at an Amazon.com Inc. facility in the US. It was hoped the win would spur a more modern union movement that achieved results and better reflected the new face of the working class. In their corner was President Joe Biden, the self-proclaimed “most pro-union president in American history.”
