Back in May, Comcast Corp.’s NBCUniversal paid $110 million for the exclusive right to stream an NFL playoff game on its subscriber-only Peacock streaming service. It was a steep price, but it paid off. Despite most viewers having to buy a $5.99 per month Peacock subscription to watch it, this weekend’s broadcast of the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory over the Miami Dolphins averaged 23 million viewers, making it the most streamed live event in US history.

As streaming services cut back on expensive original content and figure out how to stop users from canceling their subscriptions, those numbers are a reminder that betting on the commitment of a sports fanbase is the easiest route to viewer growth and profits.
