What would it take to nudge 51-year-old Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, one of the world’s highest paid actors, back into a professional wrestling ring for the first time since 2016? Last week, TKO Group Holdings Inc., owner of World Wrestling Entertainment, better known as WWE, announced that Johnson would be joining the company’s board and receiving an equity stake worth around $30 million. Within hours, Johnson was on ESPN teasing the possibility of the “greatest and biggest” ever WrestleMania — the WWE’s lucrative signature event — starring him.

Curiously, Johnson’s deal is an outlier in the multibillion-dollar, win-or-go-home world of American professional sports. Leagues have long banned or severely restricted equity grants such as Johnson’s. That’s a mistake, and it’s costing everyone money and potential wins. Athletes should finally be given the ability to earn a piece of the business to reverse the error.
