BrahMos ready to supply Russia as India emerges as a defense export power
BrahMos Aerospace has announced that it is prepared to supply its supersonic cruise missiles to Russia should Moscow formally place an order, marking a potentially significant development in the evolving defense relationship between the two long-standing strategic partners. The statement highlights India’s growing capabilities as a defense manufacturer and exporter, while also underscoring the unique nature of the BrahMos project itself—a weapon system born out of Indo-Russian cooperation that could now be exported back to one of its original technology contributors.
Speaking on the sidelines of the International Naval Salon “Fleet-2026,” BrahMos Aerospace Managing Director Alexander Maksichev stated that the company possesses both the production capacity and technical understanding necessary to meet Russian requirements.
“We are ready to fulfill the order if there is an appeal from the Russian side. Either it will be missiles for the Navy, or for ground forces,” Maksichev told Russian news agency TASS. “We have sufficient capacities, and we understand what the Russian side wants.”
If finalized, such a deal would represent an unusual reversal in traditional defense trade patterns. For decades, India has been one of the world’s largest importers of military equipment, with Russia serving as its principal supplier. Today, however, India’s expanding defense industrial base has enabled it to move from being primarily a buyer to increasingly becoming a producer and exporter of sophisticated military systems.
The BrahMos missile stands as one of the most successful examples of Indo-Russian defense cooperation.
