Quetta railway bombing and the expansion of Baloch insurgency in Pakistan

The Quetta railway blast signals a major escalation in the Baloch insurgency in Pakistan. It reflects deepening instability in Balochistan amid long-standing political and economic grievances.

On May 24, 2026, there was a suicide car bomb attack by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) near the railway area in Quetta, Balochistan. The attack targeted a shuttle train reportedly carrying Pakistani security personnel and their family members. According to Reuters and other international media reports, more than 30 Pakistani personnel were killed and many others were injured in the attack. The intensity of the explosion was so huge that it derailed parts of the train, overturned several coaches, and caused fires in nearby carriages. According to reports, the attack took place near the Chaman Phatak railway crossing close to Quetta Cantonment, where an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into or detonated beside the moving train.

The BLA claimed responsibility for these attacks, stating: “We carried out a fidayeen (suicide) attack targeting Pakistani military personnel. Dozens of soldiers were killed and injured,” and also claimed higher casualties of “82 killed and 121 injured.” These figures have not been independently verified.

These attacks came when Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asif Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif were in Beijing to get China’s support on mediation, given China’s closer ties with Iran. Importantly, they also wanted China to again start funding CPEC, which China has slowed due to attacks on Chinese workers, corruption, and mismanagement of funds by Pakistan’s ruling elite, alongside Beijing’s growing concerns over the undermining of its strategic interests by Pakistan through its deepening engagement with the United States.

Escalating insurgency and expanding operational coordination in Balochistan

These are not isolated attacks. Before this, there were coordinated attacks by the BLA across different parts of Balochistan under Operation “Herof” or “Black Storm” targeting security installations, military convoys, railways, and infrastructure. This can be seen in the repeated large-scale attacks targeting Pakistani forces, such as the Jaffar Express attack on 11–12 March 2025,........
