WASHINGTON — The UN Security Council on Monday adopted a resolution calling for an “immediate” cease-fire in the Gaza Strip during the month of Ramadan.

The United States abstained from voting on the resolution, which was supported by the council's 14 other members. On Friday, Moscow and Beijing blocked a resolution drafted by Washington describing an “immediate and sustained cease-fire” as "imperative."

As a permanent member of the Security Council, the United States has long defended Israel at the UN’s top body. Prior to Friday’s vote, it had vetoed three cease-fire resolutions, citing their failure to mention Israel’s right to self-defense or condemn Hamas.

The vote came after the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened Monday to cancel a visit by an Israel delegation to Washington this week if the US did not use its veto to block the resolution.

The Biden administration is working to stave off an Israeli offensive in Rafah, the border city where more than half of Gaza's population is sheltering. The Health Ministry in the Hamas-run enclave said Monday that at least 32,333 Palestinians have died in the five-month war, which began when Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people in southern Israel.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
