Thousands of constituents in Acadie-Annapolis and Markham-Unionville have been demanding exactly that after MPs Chris d’Entremont and Michael Ma left the Conservative caucus to join the governing Liberals, putting that party closer to a majority government.  

While the recent floor crossings have brought this issue back to the forefront of Canadian politics, the idea of mandating byelections when politicians decide to switch parties isn’t new.  

In fact, a former NDP MP introduced a private member’s bill back in 2012 that would have forced MPs to vacate their seats and run in a byelection when changing........
